A closed landfill in Douglas County, Neb. will soon become a solar array.

Officials at the Omaha Public Power District and the county plan to erect a solar facility on the capped landfill that shuttered its gates in 1989. This is made possible with a $3.5 million grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust.

Energy captured from the solar panels will power homes and businesses. Residents who live nearby expressed support for the project. The first step to making it possible is a feasibility study, which will occur in the first half of 2023.
