Colorado County ‘Cameras Up’ to Nab Dumpers

A county in south-central Colorado recently installed surveillance cameras to ID people who dump trash illegally.

Pueblo County officials installed a dozen motion-activated cameras to capture videos and still images of illegal dumpers so they can be prosecuted. Six of the cameras are in the city of Pueblo, the other six in outlying parts of the county.

Officials established a trash task force last year to address the county’s persistent dumping problem. In addition to the recent installation of cameras, that group has been working to educate the community about proper, legal ways to dispose of trash.

Among the waste disposal resources Pueblo County provides residents are a discount dump day at the county landfill; collection events for mattress and tire recycling; a “Recycle Coach” online app; and a transfer station that accepts furniture, e-waste, and appliances.
