The state of Massachusetts has updated its list of materials and items accepted by trash collection. The updated list has removed mattresses as they are difficult for trash haulers to collect and are made of mostly recyclable materials. Mattresses will be accepted through the end of the year, however, the state continues to urge people to recycle them rather than put them to the curb. Other stipulations that have been added include a rule declining textiles unless they are contaminated with mold, bodily fluids, insects, oil, or hazardous substances, and food waste if it exceeds a one-ton-per-week limit.
