Battery and e-waste are an incredibly common problem today, but luckily new solutions are popping up all over the place. Now, it looks like Washington state is about to make things much easier for residents to safely recycle batteries.
Gov. Jay Inslee is expected to sign a new law which will require producers of batteries and battery-containing products sold in Washington to fund programs for collecting and recycling batteries.
Here’s a list of rules outlined in the law:
- Require battery producers to participate in the collection of smaller batteries used in consumer electronics by 2027.
- By 2029, the collection systems would expand to include larger batteries.
- Sets recycling targets of at least 60% for rechargeable batteries and at least 70% for non-rechargeable batteries.
- Requires producers to pay for public education and outreach.
Washington is now the latest state to introduce recycling programs funded by battery producers, joining nine others and Washington D.C.
