Arlington, VA – The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) urged the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to reconsider proposed changes to the emergency exemption. NWRA is concerned that by reducing the length of an emergency exemption from 30 days to five days, cleanup and recovery efforts would be adversely affected.
“NWRA recognizes the need to deliver supplies and direct assistance when an emergency occurs and that the initial response determines an area’s ability to recover quickly,” said NWRA President and CEO Darrell Smith. “However, NWRA asks that FMCSA consider the initial response and the ongoing cleanup that is needed for recovery.”
In its comments, NWRA asked FMCSA not to reduce the exemption from 30 days to five days, but if it is warranted, FMCSA should reduce the exemption to no fewer than 15 days.
