Utah regulators are preparing to deny a permit to Promontory Point Resources for a landfill which would be located just yards from Great Salt Lake.

The state reported that it has never denied a landfill permit, which would allow the landfill to accept contaminated soil and coal ash from out of state. The operators had previously submitted a permit, which they later withdrew.

Regulators have long asked for Promontory Point to prove that a Class V landfill is needed so close to the natural resource.
