Officials in Woodlands Township, Texas, are happy with a new waste collections contract despite a 35 percent increase in the monthly household rate.

Under a renewed contract with longtime provider Waste Management, the monthly cost of trash per home went from $10.78 to $14.51. Residents pay for trash annually through their property taxes. Houston Chronicle reports that although the township’s rate has increased, it remains one of the lowest in the region.

The township has also implemented a new “Recycle Right” educational program to teach the public proper recycling practices.

The Woodlands Township’s renewed trash services contract with long-time provider Waste Management officially went into effect on Feb. 1, and officials within the township are elated with the new deal despite a moderate increase in costs per household for trash pick-up.

John Geiger, manager of environmental services for The Woodlands, was one of many township staff who worked for more than eight months on a new contract with Waste Management, which is the nation’s largest trash services company. He said although there is a 35 percent increase in monthly per-household rate, the per month bill of $14.51 is still one of the lowest in the Houston and Southeast Texas regions.
