The town is considering a $190,000 increase for trash disposal costs and will begin developing a new collections contract.

Winchester, Mass., is likely to see an increase in waste collection fees as the town’s Department of Public Works (DPW) attempts to keep up with increasing disposal costs and as the town’s contract with Covanta is set to expire in June 2020.

Wicked Local Winchester reports that the town is looking at a $190,000 increase for trash disposal. To make up for that increase, the town is considering increasing fees for transfer station stickers. And over the next few months, DPW will develop a new contract for residential and commercial solid waste collection.

Winchester residents and businesses may see an increase in trash removal fees as the Department of Public Works is trying to keep up with increasing costs for trash disposal.

Winchester is paying $59.61 per ton to dispose of trash, which the town’s staff hauls to the incinerator in Haverhill. That rate is likely to go up as Winchester’s contract with solid waste removal company Covanta expires in June 2020. Winchester’s neighboring communities Lexington, Belmont, and Arlington pay $78 per ton. With about 9,500 tons of trash a year, the town is looking at $190,000 increase for trash disposal.
